Fishbowl - FRASER DOVELL X COTE KAMCHATKA

Fresh off the back of a surf trip to Kamchatka in remote far-east Russia, we caught up with Fraser over a bowl to hear about what fuels his adventures and passions.

KAMCHATKA LOOKED LIKE ONE HELLUVA ADVENTURE. WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU?

Kamchatka was just incredible. It’s one of the wildest places I’ve ever been to and flying those mountain ranges trying to find surf in a location like that is just something I never thought I’d be lucky enough to do. It was really, really cool to be able to do that with your three best mates. Finding that left was something special, we just did not expect to get waves like that over there. We thought we’d mostly be surfing fat points so to discover a big slabby left breaking over shallow water was pretty damn cool.

AND WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED WHILE YOU WERE IN RUSSIA?

The weather. It was so unpredictable and got really gnarly. There were times when we'd come in from a long surf and have lost all feeling in our hands then you’d have to get changed in the snow but they’re just totally numb and you can’t move them - it’s is the worst. But because everything is stacked against that’s what makes cold water missions so special.

WHAT FUELS THAT SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE WITHIN YOU?

On these adventures you’re just battling so many elements all the time that make it so bloody hard. But overcoming these challenges is really gratifying and keeps you going.

YOU’RE INTO A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT THINGS ASIDE FROM SURFING AND ADVENTURING, LIKE FURNITURE MAKING. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE HOBBIES PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT AND WHAT FUELS YOUR PASSION FOR THOSE THINGS?

I’ve got way too many hobbies but I really love designing and building chairs. There’s just something so fun about getting in the studio and making these and really taking the time and effort to sculpt them. So much time goes into planning and sanding and weaving them takes so long too. You just sit there, play records and fully relax. I love it.
